PeerTube's New Mobile App: A YouTube Alternative That Won't Hijack Your Brain
PeerTube's new mobile app is revolutionizing how we watch videos online. Unlike YouTube's attention-grabbing tactics, this open-source app respects your time and privacy while delivering quality content. No endless scrolling, no data harvesting – just intentional video watching done right.
Hey waffle fam! Josh here with some exciting news from the world of ethical tech. You know I'm always on the lookout for alternatives to the attention-sucking giants of Big Tech, and today I've got something pretty special to share.
Framasoft, those awesome folks behind PeerTube (think YouTube but decentralized and privacy-focused), just dropped their first-ever mobile app for both Android and iOS. And let me tell you, this isn't just another video app – it's a completely different approach to how we consume video content.
Why This Matters
Look, we've all been there. You open YouTube to watch ONE video about fixing your garbage disposal, and two hours later you're deep in a rabbit hole of "Top 10 Times Raccoons Crashed Wedding Ceremonies." The algorithm knows exactly how to keep us scrolling, and that's by design. These platforms aren't built to respect our time – they're built to harvest our attention and data.
That's where PeerTube's mobile app comes in with a totally different philosophy. Instead of trying to trap you in an endless scroll of dopamine hits, they've deliberately designed an app that lets you watch videos without getting your brain hijacked. Pretty radical concept, right?
The Cool Stuff
Here's what makes this app different from your typical video platform:
- No Doom Scrolling
They've specifically designed the interface to avoid those addictive patterns we've all gotten used to. No infinite scroll, no autoplay rabbit holes, no manipulative notifications trying to pull you back in. Just clean, intentional video watching.
- Local Account Freedom
You don't need to go hunting for a platform to create an account on. The app creates a local account right on your device for your watch lists and favorites. It's like having a video notebook in your pocket without the usual account creation hassle.
- Platform Discovery
Remember how I'm always talking about the importance of decentralization? This app makes it super easy to explore different PeerTube instances (think of them as independent YouTube-like platforms) and find content that matches your interests. It's like having a map to explore this whole new video universe.
- Privacy First
Here's the kicker – Framasoft is a non-profit. They're not trying to sell your data or manipulate your behavior. The app is completely open source, and they're transparent about how everything works. No sketchy background tracking or data harvesting.
The Challenges
Now, it hasn't been all smooth sailing. Getting this app into the Apple App Store and Google Play Store has been... interesting. Both stores aren't really set up to handle decentralized platforms, and Apple especially has some pretty strict limitations on which PeerTube instances you can access.
If you want the full, unrestricted experience, I'd recommend grabbing the APK directly for Android (coming soon to F-Droid too). iOS users will have to work within Apple's walled garden for now, but the team is working on expanding the allowlist of platforms.
Google Play Store : limited allowlist, but users can already add the platforms they want. We plan to widen the allowlist next ;
F-Droid (coming soon) and direct download apk : all PeerTube platforms we have indexed on SepiaSearch are available. If an instance isn’t declared to our index or is moderated, you can add it manually.
What's Coming Next
The current version is just the beginning. Early 2025 will bring features like:
- Background video playback
- Account login for commenting and subscriptions
- Next video recommendations (but done ethically!)
- Tablet support
- Offline viewing
They're also planning TV support for AndroidTV (Apple TV depends on... well, Apple being Apple).
My Take
I've been playing with the app, and it's refreshing to use a video platform that isn't trying to manipulate me. Sure, it might not have all the bells and whistles of YouTube's app, but that's kind of the point. It's about intentional viewing rather than mindless consumption.
As for one living within the Apple walled-garden, being restricted to only seeing Peertube instances from a very strict allowlist is a bummer. Not able to see anything from our small Peertube instance was something of a buzzkill but, that’s what we have to deal with in how Apple treats anything and everything within the App Store.
How You Can Help
If you're tired of being the product and want to support ethical tech, here's what you can do:
- Download the app and give it a try
- Share it with your friends (especially those who complain about YouTube's algorithms)
- Consider supporting Framasoft with a donation
- Help with translations if you speak multiple languages
- Report bugs and contribute to the code if you're technically inclined
The Bottom Line
Look, I'm not saying this is going to replace YouTube overnight. But it's a real alternative that respects users and shows us what's possible when we prioritize people over profit. It's a small step toward a more ethical internet, and that's something worth supporting.
